Understanding Dominion: Rethinking the Seven Mountain Mandate

Rethinking Our Language Around Dominion and Influence

In our excitement about the Seven Mountain Mandate—the call for Christians to bring transformation to the seven spheres of society (government, education, media, family, religion, arts, and business)—we sometimes get carried away with how we express our mission. Phrases like "taking the mountain of ____” or "taking over society" can sound aggressive and potentially alarming to those listening in.

Christians often use the word dominion, but without clarity, that term can cause confusion or even fear. If we’re going to bring reformation to society, we need to be wise and thoughtful with how we frame our missional narrative. Society is watching, and our language matters more than ever.

What Does the Bible Really Say About Dominion?

The dominion mandate from God originates in Genesis:

“Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing...”
— Genesis 1:26, 28

This scripture makes it clear: Dominion was never about ruling over other human beings. Rather, it’s about stewardship of the earth and partnership with God over creation—including spiritual authority over the demonic realm.

Dominion Is Not About Control Over People

If we use the term dominion without proper explanation, we leave room for misunderstanding. History shows us the dangers of religious imposition—think of the Holy Inquisition or other attempts at Christian domination. That’s not what Jesus modeled.

The true dominion mandate is about stewarding the planet and carrying God’s image into every cultural sphere with humility and love. We are called to express His heart, not our control.

Spiritual Warfare and the Real Target of Dominion

The Bible teaches that our struggle isn’t with people—it’s with dark spiritual forces:

“We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness...”
— Ephesians 6:12

Dominion means spiritual victory over lies, fear, and demonic influence—not authority over fellow human beings. Our goal is not to impose but to shine light, bring truth, and live with integrity.

Influence Through Love, Not Imposition

Influence grows in the atmosphere of freedom. Even Jesus advanced His mission through love, not force:

“Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”
— Luke 2:52

True Christian influence comes from favor, which is born from love. This kind of favor attracts those with open hearts and repels those with selfish motives. Our mission should always reflect God’s love and character.

Advancing the Kingdom God's Way

The kingdom of God advances through freedom, not control. As we engage the Seven Mountains of influence, we must avoid even the appearance of manipulation or imposition.

God, who could instantly impose His will, chooses instead the slow, loving process of winning hearts. So must we.

"As He is, so are we in this world."
— 1 John 4:17

Let us be intentional with how we speak, write, and act. May our dominion be marked not by force but by freedom, stewardship, and love.
